7 Shower Mistakes That Damage Your Hair

There’s nothing better than a long hot shower at the end of a stressful day, as long as you’re not falling prey to the most common shower mistakes people make. No matter how much TLC you give your precious locks, simple mistakes you might be making could actually be causing damage to your hair! Below are seven mistakes people frequently make, but don’t worry—I’ll give you quick and easy ways to stop making these mistakes.

Mistake #1: Skipping Weekly Hair Treatments.

Even if you think you don’t need it, you do: everything from seasonal changed to hot tools can stress out your hair, so give your locks some love.

Mistake #2: Brushing wet hair.

Don’t do it! Your post-bathing ritual is just as important as what’s happening inside your shower. Water actually weakens your hair’s bonds, so running a brush through when it’s wet and defenseless will leave you with way more breakage and damage than if you wait 15 minutes for it to dry.

Solution: Brush before your shower, or use a wide-toothed comb to detangle after a shower.

Mistake #3: Washing your hair in hot water.

I struggle with this mistake, too. After the end of a long day, there is nothing better than a steamy shower to wash the day way! However, the reality is that hot water opens up the cuticle and can dry out your scalp and hair; this leaves your hair brittle and prone to breakage.

Solution: Use lukewarm water to wash your hair.

I know, I know. But trust me when I say you will see a difference in your hair! Lukewarm water helps lock in moisture and seal the cuticle, which can help prevent damage.

Mistake #4: Conditioning your roots with unneeded chemicals.

You should be applying your conditioner from the middle of you hair to the tips, while steering clear of roots. (Your scalp makes enough oil naturally to keep your roots moisturized, so adding conditioner to your roots can definitely lead to a bad hair day.)

There are several paraben and sulfate free conditioners that will nourish your hair, without chemicals that strip and destroy healthy hair. Some of my favorite conditioners are from Oribe. Mistake #5: Using outdated heat-styling tools.

If you’ve been tight with your blow dryer since high school, it’s time to graduate.

Solution: Upgrade your tools to avoid damaging your hair.

Mistake #6: Sticking to an old hair-washing routine.

Some people rarely wash their hair, some wash theirs every night, and others claim it’s every other day or the highway. But as long as you’re addressing your hair’s unique needs, there’s no need to adhere to a strict schedule.

Solution: Use a sulfate-free shampoo.
